Digital marketing

Link Building Basics and Importance

For those just learning about digital marketing, the concept of link building might be a bit confusing. To put it simply, link building is the process of acquiring links from other websites to your own website. These links act as "votes" for your website's credibility and authority in the eyes of search engines like Google. The more high-quality and relevant links you have pointing to your site, the more likely it is that your website will rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs). This ultimately leads to increased traffic and potential customers.

However, not all links are created equal – quality over quantity applies here. It's important to build natural and organic backlinks from reputable sources rather than spammy or irrelevant ones. Search engines are constantly updating their algorithms to penalize websites with low-quality links, so it's crucial to have a strategic and ethical link building approach.

Which common approaches do businesses and digital marketing agencies take when it comes to link building? Our next several sections, and on into part two of our series, will go over several.

Guest Posting

One of the most popular approaches to link building is guest posting. This involves creating high-quality and relevant content for another website in exchange for a backlink to your own site. It's a win-win situation – the other website gets valuable content for their audience, and you get a valuable backlink.

When pursuing guest posting opportunities, it's important to research and select websites that are reputable, have a similar target audience as yours, and allow dofollow links (links that pass on SEO value). Additionally, make sure the content you create for these websites is well-written and provides value to readers.

Directory Listings

Online directories are platforms that list businesses in specific industries or locations. These directories often include NAP (name, address, phone number) information for each business, as well as a link to their website. By claiming and optimizing your business listing on various directories, you can not only improve your online presence, but also acquire high-quality backlinks.

It's important to note that you should only submit your website to reputable directories and make sure the information listed is consistent across all platforms. Duplicate or inconsistent listings can have a negative impact on your SEO efforts.

In part two of our series, we'll discuss more common approaches to link building, such as broken link building and relationship outreach. Stay tuned for more insights from Be Locally!
